Our history dates back 40 years.

As the original food bowl for Canberra, Pialligo was the source of fresh vegetables, eggs and fruit for the newly created city.

Tanbella Orchard was first planted in the 1970s but has undergone many changes with successive owners. Originally planted with red and gold delicious and granny smiths, the orchard was transformed during the 1980s when the then owners embarked upon a plan to offer self pick apples and fruits. Apple varieties from around the world were added—from the beloved coxs pippin from England to the Belle De Buscop of Holland.

With the emphasis on picking apples fresh from the trees the constraints that have seen all but a few varieties of apple disappear from supermarkets due to poor long term storage, did not apply. Heritage and rare apple varieties were planted liberally alongside the more well known varieties such as the pink lady and fuji. Peaches, nectarines, pears and nashi pears were also planted to ensure that a self picker can collect a variety of fruits when they visit.

The current owner Christine has continued the self pick tradition that has seen the orchard become somewhat of a Canberra institution. Adding a few touches of her own with the addition of cherries and cider apples, she has also developed an extensive herb and vegetable garden.

Picnic on our lawns

We have created a picnic area in our beautiful garden where students can bring their own lunch and enjoy it with fresh apple juice and Tanbella Orchard ice-cream. Please note that this picnic area is in close proximity to a lake, and children must be supervised at all times.

Take home orders

Our take-home box includes a great variety of fresh, locally-produced seasonal fruit and vegetables like apples, nashi, peaches, pears, tomatoes and cucumbers.  Fresh apple juice, apple cider vinegar (with mother!), dried fruits (great for muesli) and garlic are also available to be included in your box.

Enjoy a day amongst the trees at Canberra's only self pick orchard, season starting late January 2021.

With the 2021 season commencing in late January and running until May, come and discover when your favourite apples, pears, peaches and berries are ripe and ready for picking. Starting with Early Golds and Summer Reds for those warmers months and ripening into Pink Ladies and Sundowners as the season cools, experience the taste of a wide and changing choice of fruit each week, straight from the trees at their very best.

Open Friday to Monday from 10am—4pm during the season, find us at 20a Beltana Road in Pialligo, pick up your bucket ($5) and start foraging for your fruit bowl ($7/kilo).

Pick your own fruit

Bring your students during our season for an outing and experience fruit picking straight from the tree to take home. Students will learn how to recognise different fruit trees, what fruit is ready to pick, and how to do it. Pre-packed fresh fruit is also available.

Apple juice making

Our apple juice is cold pressed twice per week during our season. The flavour changes week to week, but is always delicious! Should your students like to participate in this activity, please let us know when booking.
